You guys are so AMAZING!  I don't think as teachers we hear that enough!  You truly are one of a kind!  You work tirelessly to help your students in every way and often that work goes unnoticed!  You plan, you revise, you laminate, you cut, you reflect, you love, you reward, you encourage all in one day!  How do you do it all?  You do it because you LOVE teaching!  I hope this Teacher Appreciation Week, you feel that LOVE that you give your students each and every day.
As a teacher, I LOVE reading tips and secrets from inside other teachers' classrooms.  Here are a few tips that I have used over the years that make my teacher life a little bit easier.

Make sure you read through the whole post because there is a HUGE giveaway at the end of the post!

In the past, I've spent hours and hours getting cute student name tags ready for my kids.  I print them out, laminate them, cut them, and then tape them on just to have them destroyed within the first few weeks of school.  It's a big headache and not really worth it!

I've gone to a numbering system and absolutely LOVE it!  The kids get a number at the beginning of that year and I have a number list posted that shows which number belongs to which kid.  The numbers can change through out the year.  It's so much easier to move kids from desk to desk instead of having to move ALL of the desks around because they have a name tag tapped to it!

My students also have a book box that has a number name tag as well!  These name tags have been on the book boxes for 2 whole years and they still look perfect!  This secret tip has saved me a TON of prep time at the beginning of each school year!  I'm never going back to student name tags again!!

I love having a Focus Wall and I know that most people do but here is a new tip....have your students update the focus wall!  I wish I had a picture of when my students write on the focus wall, so I'll take one and update this post later this week.  It's so powerful when the students write on the focus wall because it helps them to reflect on what concepts we've been learning about.  It also helps because let's be honest sometimes I forget to update the focus wall and the students will remind me.  It's super awesome!

My last secret is to have a set of books set aside that you want your students to read during their time in the independent reading station.  These are normally books that I will be reading aloud with my students at a later time but I want them to have read before the lesson.  It helps with background knowledge and helps me focus more on close reading strategies.  Super helpful and a time saver!

Now, it's time for a giveaway to say thank you for ALL that you do as a teacher!  There are two different prize bundles that you could win, so make sure that you enter both rafflecopters.  Good luck friends!  Fingers crossed for you!

http://junglelearners.blogspot.com/2015/04/welcome-to-another-fabulous-product-swap.html

This is my very first Stop, SWAP, and Roll product swap blog hop and I was super blessed to have Kelly from An Apple for the Teacher as my swapping buddy.  She is super talented and also super duper sweet!  I had so much fun reading her blog and getting to know her a little better through Instagram.  If you don't follow her blog, you should run over and follow her by clicking on her blog button below.

http://applefortheteach.blogspot.com/

Over the last week, my students and I have been learning all about fractions so I knew that Kelly's Fraction Match-Up (Minion Style) would be perfect for them.  I love using games during our station time to help my students practice and review skills that I've taught them in math.

Fraction Match-Up (Minion Style)

I mean who doesn't LOVE minions!!  My kids were super excited when I introduced the fraction match-up game and one of them even decided to try their very best Minion impression.

But don't worry Kelly's fraction match-up game is super second grade friendly and it was an instant math workstation hit!  I used them in our pocket chart station and the kids matched the pictures to the fractions.  I really liked that the cards are small because they were all able to fit easily into our pocket chart.

My kids even helped each other!  I loved hearing them explain to others when they found out that they had matched a wrong fraction to the picture.

Kelly's fraction cards are also great to use for a quick check!  I used the cards in a small group that needed some fraction re-teaching.  I projected the cards onto my activboard using my document camera and the kids recorded the matching fractions in their math journal.  Then, I called on different students to come up and write the fractions in our class math journal to check our work.

I absolutely LOVE that these fraction cards are so versatile that I could use them in a station, whole group, or in a small group.  They really helped my students get some much needed practice with fractions and the cute minions really helped engage them in the process!  Make sure you check them out in Kelly's store!

Good luck friends!
Last year, I was super lucky to be given a classroom iPad to share with my teaching partner.  I'm always searching for new apps for my second graders, and when FarFaria contacted me last month to review their app I was thrilled!  I love that FarFaria offers a classroom library full of books.  There are sooo many book choices!  I can't wait to share some of them with you....

My boys and I love story-time!  It is our favorite time of day and the interactive stories are just so much fun!  It's so great to have a big variety of books to choose from.  My boys' favorite is The Wheels on The Bus.  The melody is very catchy and they love the bright pictures.

Mason, who will be four in early November, can easily navigate the app.  He learned quickly that when you tap on the blue auto-play button it will read the book to him.  He loves finding all of the transportation books and adding them to the favorites section.  I have no idea how he figured it out on his own!

Even Maddox, who is 20 months, tries to tap the screen and figure out the app.  His favorite books are the kitty books.  The Grumpy Cat books are very funny!  He also really enjoys the Peek-a-Boo books because they make the sounds of the animals and cars on each page.

Here are some other cool features of the FarFaria App...
  • Great Variety - There are over 600 different books available in the app and they add 5 new books each week.
  • Leveled Books -  I really love that the books are leveled.  The books are leveled from level 1 up to level 4.  Most of my second graders would love a lot of the level 4 books, but I do have some students that would benefit from the level 2 and 3 books.  The level is on the front page of each book, and it sorts the books by level too.
  • Read by Myself Option (building fluency) - Although the read-to-me option is super cool, I absolutely love that my students can read the books and turn the pages on their own.  It would be great for my read to self station.  The students can also re-read favorite books to practice fluency.  I love that option as well!
  • Favorite Books (another way to build fluency) - I kinda mentioned it above but I love that you can add books to your favorite section.  I'm always looking for engaging ways to build my students fluency and I know this app is perfect for that.  I know with the variety of books, my students will easily find a favorite book to build their fluency.
You can try the FarFaria app for free by downloading the app here and read one story a day.  I'm also super excited because FarFaria is letting me giveaway a 3 month subscription to one of my lucky readers.

Good luck friends!

I'm two weeks into my summer vacation and I'm loving it!  The boys and I have done lots of art projects, gone to the pool a few times, celebrated my niece's first birthday, and gone to the park.  We've also gotten some much needed rest!  Isn't that the best part about having a break.

I wanted to preview my newest product, and give you a sneak peek of what I plan to create over the summer.  Plus, stay tunned because there is a giveaway at the end of this blog post.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Camping-Stories-Reading-Passages-and-Questions-1273165

Last year was my first year in second grade and I loved it.  I love the independence and that I can challenge them a little more than I could with my firsties.  One of things that I plan to do more of next year is to have the kids write more about what they read.  We did a lot of that this year, but I wanted to make it a little more structured.  So, I decided to make sets of short stories with open ended response questions.  If you remember, I did create one for Easter and then I made this one about camping.

Here is a closer look at the printables for one of the camping stories.  You can also find it here on TpT.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Camping-Stories-Reading-Passages-and-Questions-1273165

The only thing that is missing is the full page color copy of the story.  My poor printer is out of colored ink!  I included a full page with just the questions that would be perfect to use with the full page color copy.  You could laminate the story and use it year and after year, then you would only need to print out copies of the questions each year.

Here are some of the printables included in the pack...

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Camping-Stories-Reading-Passages-and-Questions-1273165

I printed these out and sent them home with my kiddos to work on over the summer.  I think it would also be great for summer school use.  Here is the cover that I made and sent home with the kids.  I know they will love reading these camping themed stories!

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Camping-Stories-Reading-Passages-and-Questions-1273165

My plan for this summer is to create some nonfiction packs just like this one.  Here are the ones that I have on my list...
  1. Birds
  2. Bats
  3. Rainforest Animals
  4. Desert Animals
  5. Polar Animals
  6. Endangered Animals
Are there anymore that I should add?

And now that you've stuck with me through the whole post, here is the giveaway.  You can win your very own copy of Camping Stories and two products of your choice from my store or you can wait for two nonfiction story units of your choice.  Good luck and happy camping!
